Vermilion Closes

November 5, 2010

Well, I’m sorry to have to say, but we’re saying goodbye…

The idea for a magazine that people contributed to was a good one in theory, but with a lack of enough submissions to fill it, and a lack of people willing to help run it… nothing has been happening 😦

Thank you to those who have contributed. Sorry to those whose contributions didn’t end up making it into the next issue… and I hope the 2 issues we’ve been able to bring out have been good reading 🙂

It’s quite sad to have to say goodbye, but clearly there just isn’t enough interest…

Vermilion’s first flow :)

June 1, 2010

Well – it’s been a long time coming…  Since I started the idea back in 2008.  It had stagnated a bit due to not enough content to get it published.  But then recently it seemed to want me to renew the idea – when I got a reminder to renew the domain name and only a day or so later I noticed some friends of mine on Facebook had joined a “Red Tent” group.  Inspired to get this up and running, I figured it was possible to bring it out with only a small content, but I had no pictures – nothing to use as cover art.  But by now I’d discovered you can buy some pretty funky images online (which I’d been using on some of my other websites, so I had a look around to see if I could find something suitable.  Indeed I did!  The beautiful image of the woman’s lower half covered in rose petals!

I thought it was a perfect representation of what I wanted to achieve – something beautiful – not to hide away and be ashamed of – but something to be proud of and to see the beauty in… Also I thought it was a bit classy and not something that would instantly scare people away (like an image of a bleeding yoni might :D)  You could simply see it as a woman with rose petals on her, or you could view the petals as representing menstrual blood.   Something that should appeal to everyone (even if she could stand to eat a few chocolate cakes 😉

So… inspired again, I set about pestering women again to submit content for the mag – and we got some more stuff sent in!

It’s impossible to fit everything in an issue – so there are heaps of topics I’d want to cover in the first issue, but if we waited any longer to get more content, I think we would risk stagnating again.  But rest assured, we have plenty more ideas, and we even have more submissions on hand to include in future issues.  But we do need a flow of submissions – so that we can keep this mag alive!  So please help us by sending in articles, personal stories, art, poetry, your favourite recipes, photos of your cloth pad stash….. whatever you feel might be appropriate.

I’ve been looking through YouTube creating a VermilionMagazine page to add some interesting menstrual related vids, so others can find and watch them – and it occurred to me that places such as YouTube and menstrual-related websites  and groups, are in a way creating the same sort of idea as a Red Tent/Menstrual Hut….  Where women can pass on information to other women, and create a space of learning, nurturing and bonding.  In a society where some women can’t approach a family member or friend about these topics – they are finding other ways to reach out.

Perhaps our magazine can help that – by providing another avenue for women to find information, share experiences and stories – something that can be printed and passed on to those who don’t know about it or don’t have Internet access.

So… please go and download it.

http://www.vermilionmagazine.com

You’ll find the link on the “issues” link on the website.  That link will take you to GoogleDocs, where you can view it with their online reader or you can choose to download it (it’s a 2mb .pdf file).  Downloading it will give you a MUCH better quality version, and all the links will be clickable – whereas the online version doesn’t seem to have clickable links and the photos end up very low quality.

Feel free to comment here about it!

Poll – Personal Grooming

May 24, 2010
tags:

I’d like to have a poll each issue – where we ask a poll question in an issue of the mag and open an online poll for it… have people submit their answers and publish the results and some of the comments in the next issue.

So, the first poll will be on personal grooming 😀

There are 2 polls, please give your answers in each.  Please feel free to elaborate on your answer by commenting on the blog post (please be aware that comments may be included in the magazine but won’t include your name, just what was said).  If you would rather make an anonymous comment (I’m not sure if the blog is set to allow completely name/faceless comments) feel free to e-mail the comment instead.

Suggestions for future poll questions can also be given in the comments.

Getting ready

May 24, 2010

It’s been a long time in the making, (I originally had the idea back in 2008), but we’ll finally have our first edition of the magazine ready for publication on 1st June.

We’ve got a handful of submissions, but I think there will be enough in the magazine to provide something interesting and worth reading… and as we get the magazine out there and publish more, I’m sure we’ll get more submissions in and the magazine can grow.

We’re accepting submissions at any time though – if you miss out on getting in the current issue, we can keep your submission for a future one.
